Neuronal Avalanches Across the Rat Somatosensory Barrel Cortex and the Effect of Single Whisker Stimulation

چکیده

Since its first experimental signatures, the so called “critical brain hypothesis” has been extensively studied. Yet, actual foundations remain elusive. According to a widely accepted teleological reasoning, would be poised critical state optimize mapping of noisy and ever changing real-world inputs, thus suggesting that primary sensory cortical areas should critical. We investigated whether single barrel column somatosensory cortex anesthetized rat displays behavior. Neuronal avalanches were recorded across all layers in terms both multi-unit activities population local field potentials, their behavior during spontaneous activity compared one evoked by controlled whisker deflection. By applying maximum likelihood statistical method based on timeseries undersampling fit distributions, we show neuronal are power law distributed for potentials activity, with exponents spread along scaling line. Instead, after tactile stimulus, switches transient across-layers synchronization mode appears dominate representation input.

Infrared thermal imaging of rat somatosensory cortex with whisker stimulation.

The present study aims to validate the applicability of infrared (IR) thermal imaging for the study of brain function through experiments on the rat barrel cortex. Regional changes in neural activity within the brain produce alterations in local thermal equilibrium via increases in metabolic activity and blood flow. We studied the relationship between temperature change and neural activity in a...

Cross-whisker adaptation of neurons in the rat barrel cortex.

Neurons in the barrel cortex and the thalamus respond preferentially to stimulation of one whisker (the principal whisker) and weakly to several adjacent whiskers. Cortical neurons, unlike thalamic cells, gradually adapt to repeated whisker stimulations. Whether cortical adaptation is specific to the stimulated whisker is not known. The aim of this intracellular study was to determine whether t...

Modulatory Effects of Memantine on Neuronal Response Properties in Rat Barrel Cortex

Introduction: Memantine as N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist is used in some neurological disorders. It has been reported that memantine has modulatory effects on the somatosensory information processing in healthy subjects. This study investigated the effect of memantine on electrophysiological properties of barrel cortex neurons in male rats. Methods: Single unit recording ...

Imprecise Whisker Map in the Neonatal Rat Barrel Cortex.

The somatosensory barrel cortex in rodents contains a topographic map of the facial whiskers where each cortical barrel is tuned to a corresponding whisker. However, exactly when this correspondence is established during development and how precise the functional topography of the whisker protomap is at birth, before the anatomical formation of barrels, are questions that remain unresolved. Her...
